TIP – Disable or Control Windows Error Reporting
Posted by: Barry Cleave in Hints & Tips, tags: , Data Security, Windows, Windows Crashes, Windows Errors, Windows Tips, Windows XPWhen an application crashes Windows presents you with the option of sending an error report to Microsoft. If the system has become unstable for some reason or a particular program keeps crashing then this can be particularly annoying. Or maybe, like me, you just never send error reports in anyway. They must already be getting millions so why do they need morel. I say "Microsoft, do something with the ones you’ve got!"
Well you can disable or choose which programs will show the error report dialog, here’s how:
Open the System Propertied Dialog
You can do this by
- Choosing System in the Control Panel
- Pressing the Windows key and Pause/Break key simultaneously
- Right Clicking on the My Computer desktop shortcut icon and selecting properties from the menu
The following dialog is displayed and you need to select the Advanced Tab as shown
Now click on the Error Reporting button.
As you can see this will now let you complete disable error reporting with an option to still report serious errors. This can be quite useful as if your PC crashes and reboots while you are away you will immediately know when you return rather than sitting there wondering if that is what has happened.
If you would just like to enable error reporting for some programs or disable it for selected applications then click on the Choose Programs button (leaving Enable Error Reporting checked)
The Choose Programs dialog now lets you add programs to a "Do" report and "Do Not" report list.
Click OK on the various screens and your good to go!

I think it’s better to correct the computer errors than hiding it. If you hide it, you won’t know that your system is getting worse.

Hmm…interesting. Even though I hate those things, and I too never report my error, MS MUST have a bunch of tickets already. I remember first seeing those in XP I believe, and after about the 10th one, I quit using it.
Shutting it off though? Never thought about it, thanks for the tip on doing so!
