A utility that monitors the files accessed by any specified process or program. For the selected process it provides the filename and extension, last handle, last error, Opening module and address, the number of times that the file was opened and closed, number of read/write calls, total number of read/write bytes, the dll that made the last open-file call.
Why Would You Want It?
Ever wondered why a particular process is reading or writing to files so often or wondered what all the disk activity is about. Using Windows Task Manager and selecting the Read, Write and Other columns will show the overall activity but not which files or where they are located. This utility allows you to find out this information quickly and easily.

Using ProcessActivityView
ProcessActivityView doesn’t require any installation process or additional dll files. In order to start using it, simply run the executable file – ProcessActivityView.exe After running it, select the process that you want to inspect, and click Ok. After clicking Ok, ProcessActivityView will start to display the information about any file that is opened by the selected process.
Running the program the following screens and menus are provided:
This short review will follow the usual format of presenting the majority of information as screenshots backed up by further information where necessary. (click on any picture to enlarge where necessary) On starting the program you are presented with the process selection window:
You can either select an existing process or click cancel. The main window is then displayed and the selected process can be run:
Failed calls are marked in pink (this is optional) The following screenshot shows more detail of the menus and toolbar area:
Selecting an individual line or several lines using the mouse and Shift or Ctl keys and then clicking with the right mouse key displays the following context menu:
From here you can:
- Save or Copy selected items
- Produce an HTML report on all or selected items
- Select the columns to display
- Display the Properties window
- Refresh the window
