General Use of UnMHT

Once installed it adds two extra options to the File menu:

UnMHT_Menu

Here you can either save the current page or save all the page tabs currently open.

Alternatively you can use the right click context menu to save the current page only:

UnMHT_Menu_2

Clicking on Save as MHT opens a standard windows Save Dialog.

There is also a Hotkey option and two toolbar buttons that can be added using the standard Firefox Customize option:

UnMHT_Toolbar

As you can see one of the toolbar buttons has a dropdown menu which offers several further options (why doesn’t include a menu item to open the Options dialog?). The other button simply opens the Save dialog for the current page.

There is also a statusbar icon which when clicked displays the same menu as the dropdown from the toolbar button.

Selecting the standard save page option displays a Windows Save dialog window. Apart from the option to change the filename you are also given 2 options of the “filetype” to save in the filetype dropdown:

UnMHT_Save_Filetype

(So this is the classic of not having documentation or help files – what do these options mean?)

Well what this means is (taken from the UnMHT bulletin board so excuse the spelling/grammar) :

with [original file] saving,
html files in the mht are same to original files
which can be downloaded from the server.
on the other hand,
with [current state] saving.
html files in the mht are made with current dom tree.
objects which are inserted dynamically with javascript
(such as ads, chat messages, etc)
are saved to mht.
if the dynamic objects are depend on the time,
please use this type.
with [original file] saving, they will be lost.
however, some objects will be displayed twice or thrice when you open the mht.
(one is contained in html in mht, others are inserted dynamically)
suitable type is depend on circumstance,
but to avoid losting information, please use [current state] normally.
about other file types (images, css, sound, …),
they are same between two types.

When saving a single file the following dialog is shown

UnMHT_Save_progress

If the file already exists a Replace option dialog is shown:

UnMHT_Save_Replace

If there are errors in saving some of the individual assets (files) making up the page a dialog is shown as below:

UnMHT_Save_Dialog

Save all tabs as MHT

When this option is chosen the following dialog is displayed:

UnMHT_Save_All Tabs

Options include choosing the directory/folder in which to save the files and providing a common prefix for all files.

N.B to Save the pages press the Large Save button/Bar

If there are any errors in saving components for individual files then an additional screen is shown detailing the errors:

UnMHT_Save_All Tabs_Errors

and finally if the file name already exists for any single mht file then this dialog is shown:

UnMHT_Save_Overwrite

UnMHT Cache

The cache display item shows the cache information in a new tab:

UnMHT_Cache

UnMHT Options

The options are available through the Tools- Add-ons menu item and show the following screens:

General Tab

UnMHT_Preferences_General

Filter Tab

UnMHT_Preferences_Filter

Save Tab

UnMHT_Preferences_Save

Lets you set the filename, context menu item and hotkey

Others Tab

UnMHT_Preferences_Others

It is (was) a bit annoying, that it does not become part of the File menu ‘Save As’.
I say ‘was annoying’, as I have set the keyboard shortcut to Ctrl Spacebar.
That nows shows the mht Save As dialog.
    This feels very natural.
I highlight a word or two, within the web page, which is to become the name of my mht file.
I use Ctrl C to copy the name.
Then Ctrl Spacebar to show the Save As dialog.
Then Ctrl V to paste the name.
And then I hit the Enter key.

This addon looks good, I didn’t know about it. I may not use archiving web pages so much but it does make life easier if it’s just in one file. The project seems to be quite active because they’ve now updated their addon for firefox 3.5 too. Great!. Thanks for sharing it. I think Firefox wins in this area and thats what differs it from other browsers, IE and opera. Opera widgets are not as strong as Firefox addons (in my opinion).

Firefox doesn’t natively handle the web archive single file format. The advantage is that using this format saves all the elements of the web page as a single file.
