Refog Free Keylogger is a great way to preserve the information you are immediately typing into applications. The only small downside is that it takes a bit of reverse engineering or interpreting to work out what you did in terms of corrections with the keyboard and even more difficult is to sort out corrections or cutting/pasting with the mouse when you try to retrieve what you have done. However as a method of “backing up” what you have immediately typed there is no better alternative that I am aware of.
I am also very impressed by how much of the overall functionality is available in the free version. This is enough for my needs and I can fill in my gap for screenshots with other freeware alternatives. I like the way the GUI has been designed and wish other developers could try to achieve the same degree of compact functionality in a single main interface.
Personally I rate this as:
Very Useful (Essential?) – Easy to Use – Very well designed and implemented
Other good (Whitehat) uses for Refog Free Keylogger are also outlined on their website and include the use for checking on your children’s web surfing habits, although I would personally suggest you need too think very hard about advice, trust and relationships compared against potential threats and harm to your children before you “spy” on them at this level. The installation of a good net filtering/protection system should be your first port of call.
What Could Make it be Better?
- Timed screenshots (available in paid version)
- Lower resource (memory) use

Using a keylogger like this to backup what you wrote is an interesting idea. I don’t know whether it will work for me, but I will give it a go.
A friend of mine uses a keywordlogger to keep an eye on what his young children do online, which I think is another good legitimate use of a keylogger.
