More About What it Does in Detail:

WakeOnStandby_Banner

The dennisbabkin website gives the following details:

We’ve been asked many times if it’s possible to wake up Windows-based system from a Stand-by mode (or Hibernation) using a resident program. The answer is yes, it is possible. This simple utility will let you do it. It is based on a single Windows API that allows to signal a waiting event and resume a thread at a predefined time. This utility can also send your system back into Stand-by mode (hibernate it, power it off, or log-off a user), provided your hardware supports it. Moreover you can also use it as a scheduler to run programs on timer without involving Stand-by mode. Our latest feedback shows that this utility could be used for an in-car PC to optimize booting time and to save battery life.

Having installed WakeupOnStandBy and running it the following screens and menus are provided:

This review will follow the usual format of presenting the majority of information as screenshots backed up by further information where necessary.

(click on any picture to enlarge where necessary)

System Tray icon

When running the following systray icon is presented along with a Tooltip showing the settings:

WakeOnStandby_Systray_Icon

If you run multiple instances (see below) then each instance will have its own systray icon, settings and Tooltip.

The systray also has a right click menu associated with it:

WakeOnStandby_Systray_Menu

The options are all fairly self explanatory all will become clear from the following details and explanations.

Main Window

WakeupOnStandBy_Main_Gui

From here you are able to set the times and programs plus main options you need. As you can see from the screenshot the first settings are for the wakeup time when in standby mode. I find this rather counterintuitive as to my mind the first thing you ant the program to do is put the PC into Standby/Hibernate mode so that you can wake it up later!

You can also see that you can set the PC to go into Standby?Hibernate mode some hours/minutes/seconds after the wakeup event. Again I would want this to be the other way round and have the PC Wakeup at some predetermined time or hours/mins/secs after it has gone into standby/hibernate mode.

Clicking on the Pick button shows a small window that allows to set a date and time rather than input the hours/mins/secs:

WakeOnStandby_Main_Pick

You will also note that there are several checkboxes to select (or not) options to:

  1. Turn on monitor sand resume from screen saver
  2. Keep on screen afterwards
  3. Repair network
  4. Specify what to do next
  5. Run program after wakeup
  6. Run programs before hibernate/standby
  7. Switch to tray

The Start button puts WakeupOnStandBy into active mode and the button next to Start  shows the following options:

WakeOnStandby_Main_Options

Again these are all self explanatory and the Perform Now submenu (which can also be accessed from the systray icon) allows you to put the PC into standby/hibernate mode – as this cannot be scheduled for the first time (but can be effectively scheduled in multiple instances or by using another scheduling program such as ) you have to use this menu to put the PC into hibernate/standby.

Other options here allow you to save .BAT batch files which can be run by double clicking or scheduling them with a suitable scheduling program such as the Windows Schedule Tasks utility which can be found in your Start menu under Accessories/System Tools)

You can also save the command line arguments to create a Run file option.

You can choose to save the Multi_Session link to enable the running of multiple instances so that you can schedule several different sets of on/off and programs to run in any one day/period.

As you can see this all gets a bit complicated for any but the experienced user but as I said earlier perseverance will pay of in terms of your bank account if nothing else.

Options Screen

These are the global options you can set:

WakeOnStandby_Main_Options_General

You can also set different Network Repair options which are often necessary to get networking running again from a wakeup event. You can experiment with two different default options or make up your own if necessary:

WakeOnStandby_Main_Options_Repair_Network

About Screen

WakeOnStandby_Main_About

This provides access to all the help[ options and the command line information (advanced users only).

That’s really cool. I, too, run my laptop nearly 24 hours a day. I just hate waiting for the boot process every time i turn the sucker on. This will be a welcomed alternative. How do you find such great tools? I don’t expect you to reveal your secrets because then I, or your other visitors for that matter, wouldn’t need to visit your site. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

    alternative …
    1. powersaving set to standby at 30 mins (say)
    2. use scheduled tasks to wakeup and run jobs required
    3. if unable to schedule do a dummy schedule (run notepad, standby after 2 hours)

    Hi,

Thanks for to everyone for the comments.

panic attack – no secret to finding these just searching the web to see what is available :)

jbhq – Yes, that will work, just nice to have a utility that does it all for you.

Outlook – I have the power button set for standby so what you suggest works for me as a quick power down/up solution. Having an automatic setting just means I can walk away and not worry about forgetting to manually power down.

    Thanks again to you all,

    Barry

It is amazing how much energy and money is wasted by leaving products on when they need not be. Even some computers and other appliances still use energy even when shut off. It is best to unplug all these devices when not in use to make sure no extra power is being used for no reason.

  7. Efficient TVs UNITED STATES Windows XP Mozilla Firefox 3.0.6 says:

It is crazy to see how much phantom power is used by inefficient electronics. Energy Efficient Electronics are easier to find nowdays though, and ideas like this just help us all save money too.

Seems like a great tool, lots of functionality.
