Shell Extensions are in-process COM objects which extends the abilities of Windows operating system. Most shell extensions are automatically installed by the operating system, but there are also many other applications that install additional shell extension components. For example: If you install WinZip on your computer, you’ll see a special WinZip menu when you right-click on a Zip file. This menu is created by adding a shell extension to the system.

The ShellExView utility displays the details of shell extensions installed on your computer, and allows you to easily disable and enable each shell extension.

ShellExView can be used for solving context-menu problems in Explorer environment.

Having installed ShellExView the following screens and menus are provided:

This review will follow the usual format of presenting the majority of information as screenshots backed up by further information where necessary.

The options are all fairly self explanatory all will become clear from the following details and explanations.

Main Window

ShellExView_Main_Start

When first started ShellExView scans the system for the shell extensions and the main window is blank. There is a message at the bottom left in the Status Bar which says “Loading…  “

When scanning is completed the Shell Extensions are shown along with comprehensive details.

The available columns for display are extensive:

Functions can be accessed from the Menu and Toolbar:

The Red and Green toolbar buttons allow quick Disabling and Enabling of any selected object(s).

Right clicking on any object line in the GUI reveals the internal context menu for ShellExView

Disable (Enable)

Items can be selected individually or multiple selections made in the usual way with the mouse and Shift or Ctrl keys. These can the be disabled (or enabled if already disabled) using the menu items, the context menu or the toolbar buttons. A dialog is shown as below:

Open CLSID in RegEdit

This opens the Windows registry edit (RegEdit) at the entry for the object:

Save, Copy, Export

Selected items can be saved as a text file which is formatted, copied to the clipboard as a single line text string or exported to an HTML file to display in your browser:
