WinSock XP Fix
fix XP internet connectivity
Our Rating:
(Good)
WinSock XP Fix offers a last resort if your Internet connectivity has been corrupted due to invalid or removed registry entries. It can often cure the problem of lost connections after the removal of Adware components or improper uninstall of firewall applications or other tools that modify the XP network and Winsock settings. If you encounter connection problems after removing network related software, Adware or after registry clean-up; and all other ways fail, then give WinSock XP Fix a try. It can create a registry backup of your current settings, so it is fairly safe to use. We actually tested it on a test machine that was having a Winsock problem due to some Adware removal, and after running the utility and rebooting, the connectivity was restored.
Having installed Winsock Fix XP the following screens and menus are provided:
This review will follow the usual format of presenting the majority of information as screenshots backed up by further information where necessary.
(click on any picture to enlarge where necessary)
Main Window
A very simple Window with just 3 buttons:
ReG-Backup Button
Opens the registry backup utility ERDNT
Clicking OK starts the backup process
Here you can choose the backup directory and the registry sections to backup
Personally I prefer to set a System Restore Point
When the backup is complete you see the following message.
As you can see you just need to go to the ERDNT folder and run the ERDNT.EXE program:
Fix Button
Clicking on the fix button displays the following window:
Clicking on the Yes Button runs the program and resets the registry entries to defaults.
N.B. If you have set a manual IP address under TCP/IP settings this will be reset to the default “Obtain an IP Address automatically” in which case you will need to reset this after rebooting using the Internet Protocol settings window in the Local Area Connection Status dialog which is accessed from the Control Panel Network Connections applet.
When the Winsock XP Fix program has completed updating the registry the reboot dialog is displayed:
You can click Cancel if you want to reboot later.
About Button
This displays information about what the program does which I have reproduced here for those of you who may be interested.

Hi Acakadut,
Thanks for your comment and I agree that anyone should be very careful about “messing” with the system, whether it’s files, registry settings or information held in memory. There are lots of programs which may do this in a way that does not use standard MS system calls/functions which may be dangerous to system stability.
However, there are also lots of programs that simply provide a nice GUI to system calls or DOS commands which are perfectly safe to use. I don’t know if Winsock XP Fix is one of these but it has been around for quite a while and seems to do the job needed without a lot of bad reports on the internet.
System admins will use scripts of DOS commands that do what Winsock XP Fix does so I reckon that if you don’t want to use it try the scripts or the individual DOS commands.
Regards,
Barry Cleave

It’s really a good effort and i really appreciate it… Everyone should be very careful about “messing” with the system, whether it’s files, registry settings.. The removal of Adware is a very common cause of these sort of problems…

Awesome tool.. Due to a virus outbreak (Sasser, backdoor.rbt, spyware, etc..) my local network access would not function, even after removing the offending software. I would always receive a network error immediately when trying to access any other machine. This tool repaired the damage done to the network configuration perfectly! Wonderful tool!

Winsock XP Fix provides a very simple and easy to use solution to the problem. It provides the means to backup the registry although, personally, I would prefer to create a Restore Point in Windows before applying. I would always receive a network error immediately when trying to access any other machine

Registry cleaning is usually not enough, try performing at least the following steps:
1. Clean up registry (you can do it with free auslogics regcleaner)
2. Defragment registry (to reduce its size by removign gaps from step 1)
3. Clean disks (remove junk files)
4. Defrag disks (very importnat step – use either Auslogics Disk Defrag or Defraggler)
This should give your PC a boost!

Indeed this is a good effort and i really appreciate that. It is really helpful to people, to use anti virus without any problem. It also makes use of the Freeware ERDNT Registry Backup Program so that you can make a backup copy of the registry before changes are made.

Most of the Internet connectivity problems arise out of corrupt Winsock settings… You will be able connect to the Internet, but the packets won’t transfer back and forth… This article lists the methods to reset/repair the Winsock configuration to defaults….
