Reclaim Statusbar Space in Firefox with Statusable
Posted by: Barry Cleave in Firefox Add-ons, tags: Add-ons, Firefox, Freeware, Independent Review, Software, Utilities, Windows, WIndows Vista, Windows XPMore About What it Does in Detail:
Statusable installs just like any other Firefox add-on and is available at the Mozilla Add-ons website here.
Quote from the Add-ons page:
Long Description
Installing multiple extensions progressively clutters the statusbar with labels and icons; space allocated to the standard statusbar text shrinks to a point where it’s not usable anymore.
Statusable is a Firefox extension that creates a second statusbar, reserved for the progress bar and standard statusbar text (usually used for link destinations).Works with:
- Firefox: 1.0 – 3.0.*
There is also a developers page at http://ptaff.ca/statusable/?lang=en_CA
General Use of Statusable
This review will follow the usual format of presenting the majority of information as screenshots backed up by further information where necessary.
(click on any picture to enlarge where necessary)
Once installed Statusable displays an extra statusbar at the bottom of the Firefox window in the Firefox Find bar:
These display different text depending on what is happening:
In the above example (which only shows part of the whole statusbar area) the Statusable bar is at the bottom and shows that Firefox is waiting for transmission of the webpage data from the addons-mozilla.org website. The statusbar at the top shows information from other add-ons and Firefox.
This screenshot shows data being transferred. In this instance from the ProReviewer website. You can see that the main statusbar above has changed as it depends on what is going on in Firefox at the time.
This example shows the information for a link when the mouse is hovered over hyperlink text on the webpage. In this instance the link is for an internal admin page in the ProReviewer Wordpress area for comments.

I don’t know if I really need this plugin. But I will give it a try. Would be nice to get a little more out of Firefox.

What I want is another statusbar so that I can give room to my icons that can not be displayed due to shortage of space in current only one statusbar. That way I could have all of my addon icons displayed on the statusbars. Is it possible.!!!!

That’s actually a good find. With the new laptops and monitors now in the “wide aspect ratio” format, vertical space is at a premium. I hate those toolbars ( that’s you Yahoo! ) that get bundled into other software and steal 20-30 pixels of my browser space…

This is very useful, particularly when combined with other add-on which help with displaying the information that you need or using add-on options to limit what is displayed in the status bar. So if you need a bit more room in your status bars this certainly helps.
