Privacy – Use Disk Redactor to Remove Traces of Old Deleted File Data from your Drives

More About What it Does in Detail:
The Cezeo website gives the following details:
Disk Redactor is a WIPE utility that lets you securely erase any old ( deleted ) files and prevent them from being recovered. All your private sensitive insecurely erased information will be wiped from free unused space on your drives to ensure complete data destruction.
This is necessary because when you delete a file, it is not gone forever, and any file removed from the Recycle Bin can be easily recovered! The Windows delete function does not clear the space where the deleted file has been located but only marks an entry in the directory (folder) as deleted. All data and information about the file still remains on the disk and can be restored!
On running Disk Redactor the following screens and menus are provided:
This review will follow the usual format of presenting the majority of information as screenshots backed up by further information where necessary.
(click on any picture to enlarge where necessary)
Main Window
This provides access to the Cezeo website,
“help” via the Cezeo Disk Redactor page
an Options and a Wipe button
Options
As can be seen from the screenshot the Options are all grayed out. This happens in both XP and Vista. No explanation could be found on the Cezeo website which is frustrating
Wipe
Clicking the Wipe button brings up a standard file/folder browser window. (You can select a folder but Disk Redactor ignores the folder and just wipes the disk)
Having selected the disk to wipe the program then shows a confirmation window:
Clicking Yes starts the wipe process and the Wipe button changes to “Cancel Wipe”
The message box at the bottom of the window displays appropriate messages and their is a progress bar above the message box:
Earlier Build
This is the main GUI from an earlier version of Disk Redactor with Options as checkboxes. These appear to “work” as the checkboxes can be ticked/unticked, although checking the background option made no obvious difference when wiping as the process priority was not changed. Maybe this is why options are grayed out on the current build as they don’t actually do anything

Don’t bother with Disk Redactor, it does not work. To prove it get a copy of File Scavenger.
Create and erase whatever file you want. Use Disk Redactor to supposedly erase deleted
files. Then use File Scavenger to recover the deleted file. Sorry, folks, its more internet crapware.

Previously erased files always takes so much data at hard disk, which reduce free space available. It’s important to have a software installed like the above.

Sounds like a pretty neat tool. I din’t actually realize files weren’t completely removed when deleting. How come the files are removed from the disk space then?

Yes deleted means deleted. No traces should be left because unnecessary space will be utilized for that. Good job, this really a good post about the application.
